Design System Foundations for LoveToKnow

Scaling consistency across multiple products
Context
LoveToKnow is a media company with a broad ecosystem of digital products, each developed over time with its own structure, patterns, and visual language.
As the platform grew, this lack of alignment started to impact both the user experience and the way teams worked internally.
The Challenge
Fragmentation → Inefficiency → Design System → Consistency + Scalability
Each product had evolved independently, leading to inconsistencies in interaction patterns, visual design, and overall user experience.
This fragmentation not only affected users, but also created
inefficiencies across teams, with duplicated efforts and no shared foundation to build upon.
The challenge was to create a system that could unify the experience across products while still allowing enough flexibility for each one to respond to its specific needs.
Role
I was part of the Foundations team within Product Design, contributing to the definition and evolution of the design system across multiple products.
Process
This work was approached as a systems problem rather than a series of individual design solutions.
We started by auditing existing products to understand how they differed and where patterns could be aligned. This helped us identify inconsistencies, but also common ground that could serve as a starting point for a shared system.
From there, we defined a set of core foundations, including design principles, typography, color, spacing, and reusable patterns. The system was built and maintained in Figma, allowing us to create shared libraries and ensure consistency across teams.
A key part of the process was continuous iteration with designers from different products on a weekly basis, including LoveToKnow, YourDictionary, WordFinder by YourDictionary, GolfLink, and Bibliography.com. These sessions helped ensure alignment while keeping the system grounded in real product needs.
Throughout the process, we had to balance unification with flexibility. While the goal was to standardize components and create a shared foundation, it was equally important not to lose the unique identity of each product. Each one needed to remain recognizable and adapted to its specific audience and context.
Working closely with designers and developers, we ensured the system was not only conceptually solid, but also practical and adoptable in real workflows.
Through cross-team collaboration, we aligned on a foundation that improved consistency without losing individuality.
Outcome
The result was a more cohesive ecosystem, where products felt more consistent and easier to navigate.
Internally, the design system helped reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and establish a shared language between teams. It also made it easier to scale new features and onboard new contributors.
Reflection
This project reinforced the importance of thinking beyond individual screens and designing for systems.
Building foundations meant making decisions that scale, balancing consistency with flexibility, and aligning multiple stakeholders around a shared vision.
